I recently stopped taking my medication, but I’m not sure why I stopped taking it…

Hey! I’m am looking for advice about medication. I recently stopped taking my medication, but I’m not sure why I stopped taking it. But inevitably, my depression came back to kick my ass. I still had my pills, so I began taking them again, but I hate it so much! It’s become a trigger for me to see any type of pill and taking them have become somewhat of a chore to me. I only take them when my girlfriend tells me…any thoughts on why or what to do? I’ve been taking pills for 8 years and I don’t know what’s changed…..

I am so sorry that you are going through this! It must be so hard to feel beholden to something. But, it is nice to know that you have loved ones, your girlfriend, that care about you and your mental and emotional well-being.

Is there a reason you do not like this type of medication? Or do you dislike all medication? Have you thought about contacting a therapist to help you get to the root of the problem? Just because it seems that everything was fine until recently.

In the meantime, have you tried rewarding yourself whenever you take a pill? You can reward yourself with anything, whether it be big or small. You can also try an affirmation. You could stand in the mirror and take your pill while saying an affirmation about how happy you are to be taking care of yourself. Or an affirmation saying, “I take care of the world when I take care of myself.” Another affirmation is, “I always take my health seriously”, or, “I am becoming healthier.” A really good affirmation is, “Each day it is easier to do what I know is best for my body.”

Positivity is key when it comes to doing something you do not wish to do. Try the positive affirmations or rewarding yourself and see if they help. But, I strongly suggest you visit a psychologist; they can help you overcome your aversion to taking medication.
